In 1920, the city of Boynton was incorporated as a town. Boynton covered all the designated area up to the ocean.

In 1931, there was a tax dispute regarding the beach area properties and the nearly bankrupt city of Boynton. At that time, a new town called Boynton Beach was created. The town encompassed an area three miles long and .5 miles wide right at the ocean’s edge.

In 1937, an emergency meeting of the Town Commission of Boynton Beach was called to discuss changing the town’s name. Evidently, mail intended for Boynton Beach was being delivered to Daytona Beach, and vice versa. A contest was held to rename the town, and Ocean Ridge was born.

Finally, in 1941, the town of Boynton changed its name to Boynton Beach. Hopefully, naming fever has died down in the years since 1941, and the renaming saga is at an end!
Residents of Ocean Ridge include retirees and a growing population of young affluent professionals. For the most part, residents share a strong desire to protect the environment. Restoration of the eroding beach, protection of sea turtles, and continued beautification are major issues.
